The ruby,
birthstone for July, is among the most highly prized of gemstones,
Ancient Orientals believed that the ruby was self-luminous. They called it
"glowing stone" or "lamp stone." The word ruby is
derived from the Latin 'ruber', meaning red. Rubies were
thought to bring good health, as well as guard against wicked thoughts, amorous
desires and disputes. It was also believed that if a ruby turned darker in
color it was a warning of coming misfortunes, illness or death.
The ruby is traditionally linked with protection,
contentment, and harmony. It is a symbol of passion, glory and brings
freedom from care. |
