March has two
birthstones -- aquamarine and bloodstone.
Aquamarines, with their clear blue-green color, ("aqua" meaning water and "mare"
meaning sea) promised protection against the dangers of the sea, and were
carried often as talismans by sailors. The aquamarine was also thought to
have medicinal and healing powers, especially for problems of the stomach,
liver, jaws and throat. It was once believed to be an effective antidote
against poison. Aquamarines were used it for telling fortunes and foreseeing the
future also.
The Aquamarine has been linked to the making of new friends as well as affection
and love, hope and health. Some people believe that wearing this
stone brings out intuition, sensitivity and even one's inner spiritual side.
The second
birthstone for March is the bloodstone.
Legend says that the bloodstone was formed when drops of Christ's fell to
the ground during the crucifixion. The bloodstone was believed to hold
healing powers, particularly for blood disorders, including blood poisoning and
stopping the flow of blood from a wound. Bloodstone was also believed to draw
out the poison of snakes. Bloodstones are for protection, calming and
strength. They ease irritability and impatience.
